Repair the Thread, Keep the Part
The coil is stainless steel and the casting around it usually is not. That gap is the whole point of the repair. Once the insert is in, the bolt pulls against hardened steel rather than soft aluminum, so the joint survives being opened and closed again instead of chewing itself out a second time. Manufacturers install the same inserts into brand new parts for exactly that reason. A repair costs one coil and an afternoon. Replacing the housing costs the housing.

M8x1.25 and M8x1.0 are both 8 mm bolts. They take different taps and different coils, and an insert cut for one will not hold the other. The same trap sits between 1/4-20 and 1/4-28.
Read the size off the original fastener when you still have it. Otherwise put calipers on the shank and a thread gauge against the threads. A metric gauge reads the millimeters between crests, an inch gauge counts threads per inch. Socket size on the bolt head tells you nothing about either number.
Common metric coarse
M5x0.8, M6x1.0, M8x1.25, M10x1.5, M12x1.75. Fine-pitch versions exist at every one of those diameters, so pitch still needs checking.
Common inch, UNC
1/4-20, 5/16-18, 3/8-16, 7/16-14, 1/2-13. Fine-thread kits swap these for 1/4-28, 5/16-24, 3/8-24 and the rest of the UNF series.

The tap is not a normal tap
An M8x1.25 repair does not use an M8x1.25 tap. It uses an STI tap, short for screw thread insert, which cuts a deliberately oversized holding thread for the outside of the coil. The inside of the installed coil is what gives M8x1.25 back. Reaching for a standard tap is the single most common way one of these repairs goes wrong.
304 stainless coils
The inserts are type 304 stainless wire, wound to a diamond cross section so the coil forms a thread on its outside and its inside at the same time. It squeezes down as the tool drives it in, then springs back out against the holding thread and stays put.
Insert length, written as 1D or 1.5D
The number is a multiple of the bolt diameter. On an M10 thread, 1D runs about 10 mm of insert, 1.5D about 15 mm, 2D about 20 mm. Longer is not automatically better. A blind hole also needs room below the coil for the tap lead and the tang.
Tanged and tangless
Most kits use a tang, the small crosspiece at the bottom of the coil that the installer pushes against. Snap it off once the insert has seated, then fish it out. A loose piece of stainless rattling around inside a gearbox is not a problem worth creating while fixing a different one.
Free-running and screw-locking
A standard coil turns like any other thread. A screw-locking coil carries a gripping section that holds torque against the bolt and resists backing out under vibration. General repair kits ship free-running unless the listing says otherwise.
What the kit does not include
The drill bit comes in the case, the drill does not. Bring cutting fluid for steel, a way to keep the bit square to the original axis, and the torque figure for the finished joint. That last number comes from the vehicle or equipment spec, never from the insert.

This has 5 metric and 5 SAE of most common sizes for the price of a single size that I have look at in the past at hardware stores. Great quality, not some cheep junk. consumerThis set has saved my rear end a few times already.. Im not sure what's up with my luck with bolts but I've been stripping the bolts on my valve cover. This set costs similar to the branded Helicoil that comes with only 1 size. I've never used the Helicoil branded ones, my only experience has been with this set, but i can confirm these coils do work. Have used them 3 times already on my valve cover and they're holding just fine! It'd be pretty foolish to buy just 1 size when you can have 5 different sizes. If youre screwing up that much though, it might be better to have someone else do future installs instead of yourself.. But if you do screw up at least you have a backup plan!

Rebuilding an internal thread that has stripped, worn, cross-threaded or corroded to the point where it no longer holds its bolt.
Drill the damaged thread away. Cut a larger holding thread with the insert tap. Wind a coiled wire insert into that new thread. The inside of the coil reproduces the original size, so an M8x1.25 hole takes an M8x1.25 bolt again once the repair is finished. The hole around it gets bigger. The fastener stays the same.
Match the kit to the original fastener's diameter and its pitch. Both numbers, not just the first one.
M6x1.0 means a 6 mm nominal diameter with 1.0 mm from one thread crest to the next. 1/4-20 means a quarter-inch diameter with 20 threads per inch.
Diameter alone will get you the wrong kit. M8x1.25 and M8x1.0 are both 8 mm bolts, and they take different taps and different coils. When the original spec is unknown, measure the bolt and read the pitch off a thread gauge before ordering.
Metric threads are described in millimeters: M5x0.8, M6x1.0, M8x1.25, M10x1.5, M12x1.75. Kits sold as SAE use inch-based Unified threads, where the second number counts threads per inch, as in 1/4-20 UNC or 3/8-24 UNF.
Threads that look close enough are not. A correct fastener starts by hand and keeps turning smoothly. If it binds after two or three turns, back it out and check the spec rather than leaning on the wrench, because forcing it destroys what is left of the parent thread.
Buy a single-size kit when you already know the thread. Everything in the tin gets used and you are not paying for nine sizes you may never touch.
A multi-size case earns its price in a shop, a garage or a service truck, where the next stripped hole is unpredictable.
Piece count is a poor guide either way. Most of the number printed on a 320-piece or 348-piece case is spare coils. Read the list of diameters and pitches instead.

Aluminum is where these inserts do their best work. A steel coil gives the bolt a hard surface to pull against instead of soft casting, which is also why manufacturers press inserts into new aluminum parts that get taken apart repeatedly.
What a coil cannot fix: a cracked boss, a hole already drilled oversize, or a casting with too little metal left around the repair. Those need a solid insert, machining, welding, or a new part.

The hole decides, not the industry. A repairable internal thread with enough metal around it is a candidate no matter what it is bolted to.
Many engine threads, yes, with two cautions that matter more than which kit you buy.
Chips come first. Drilling and tapping produce metal swarf that must not end up in a cylinder, an oil gallery, a coolant passage or a bearing. Sometimes that means pulling the component off the engine before a drill touches it.
Alignment comes second. The new thread has to follow the original axis. On a cylinder head, a manifold or a cover, a hole drilled a few degrees off changes where the part sits and how well it seals.
Not automatically.
A spark plug repair depends on reach, seat design, head material and available depth, not only on the thread being M14. A generic M14 coil can be the wrong length or the wrong seat type for the port.
Application-specific spark plug kits exist because they were dimensioned around the plug. Conventional wire inserts also do not belong in taper-seat plug ports, which take a solid bushing repair instead. Plan the chip control before the first cut either way.
Often stronger than the thread it replaced, particularly where a steel coil takes over from aluminum or another soft parent metal.
That is not the same as the whole joint getting stronger. Final strength comes from insert length, wall thickness, how square the hole was drilled, fastener grade and load direction.
A coil sitting in cracked or heat-damaged material is still sitting in cracked material.
Insert length written as a multiple of the bolt diameter. A 1D coil is roughly one diameter long, 1.5D is about one and a half, 2D is about two.
On an M10 thread that works out to roughly 10 mm, 15 mm and 20 mm.
Pick the length from the depth you actually have, the parent material and the load. A 2D insert in a hole with 12 mm of usable depth is not a stronger repair. It is an insert that will not seat.
A bad insert comes out with an extraction tool. It does not go into a second hole.
Pulling a coil distorts it and can wreck the drive feature, so treat installed inserts as consumable and fit a fresh one after correcting whatever went wrong.
The drill, the tap and the installation tool are the reusable part. Replacement coil packs top a kit back up without paying for the cutting tools twice.
